Rebekah's Story

Rebekah came into care due to neglect and abuse over a year ago. At first when she arrived, she was scared. She didn't know what to expect who we were or our expectations. It was a new experience for both of us because it was out first placement and a teenager. We were only given a few hours notice which only gave her a couple minutes to gather some of her belongings. We were unsure of how long the placement would be for. It took a while for both of us to adjust.

It was the first time she had ever truly experienced what a “normal” family did. For example, taking walks together, sitting and watching TV as a family, and going camping. She experienced many firsts as well; such as going to the circus, trick-or-treating, a birthday party, shopping, and being able to talk freely. Keep in mind she was already 15 when she arrived. I was able to help her through her first heart break. As time past, we became more comfortable, more open and more in tune to each other. She became a true part of our family.

This placement proved to be a “prized” placement.
